We raise a flock of Buff Orpington hens for eggs. This breed is well adapted to foraging and very cold hardy. During the day, the hens are allowed to frolic all over the farm. You frequently find them in small batches exploring the pastures, hanging out under a shady tree, or teasing the calves. At night, we bring our hens under cover to protect them from predators and the elements. Our eggs cost $2.25 per half dozen.

We acclimate our young Buff Orpingtons to pasture in the safety of chicken tractor before they are allowed to free range.

We also raise chickens for meat. We receive our baby chicks when they are about 2 days old and raise them by hand indoors for the first few weeks. Once the weather is suitable, we place them outside in a "chicken tractor" which we move to fresh pasture daily. The birds grow on pasture until they are large enough to eat. Our chicken costs $4.25 per pound, and birds average around 5 pounds.
